Printing Guidelines for Different Packaging Materials – Ryt Packaging

To help you get the best results with your printed packaging, we’ve created this comprehensive guide. It covers essential information about printing using CMYK and Pantone colors on various stocks, including brown kraft, white card (bleached), corrugated cardboard, and luxury rigid material. You’ll also learn how finishes like matte and gloss lamination can impact the final appearance.

CMYK uses four inks – cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, to create a wide color range. It’s ideal for full-color prints but can produce slight variations between runs. Pantone, on the other hand, uses specific pre-mixed inks to deliver exact color consistency, perfect for brand colors or high-precision needs.

Brown kraft has a natural brown base that dulls lighter ink shades. Yellow and light orange often appear faded or may not show clearly. For better contrast and legibility, it’s advisable to use deeper, more saturated colors for custom printed kraft packaging boxes.

White card provides a neutral and clean background that allows all colors to appear vibrant and accurate. It’s especially effective for detailed artwork and photography because it doesn’t distort the intended hues. Therefore, custom printed cardboard boxes are are the first choice for retail product packaging especially cosmetic products, toys, small electronics, and medical equipment.

Yes, but if it is brown corrugated kraft, it’s important to consider the natural brown tone and surface texture. A white top liner or base coat can be applied to improve color vibrancy. Otherwise, colors may appear slightly muted compared to smoother, whiter surfaces of custom printed corrugated cardboard boxes.

Luxury rigid stock is durable and smooth, making it excellent for detailed printing and premium finishes like foil stamping. Custom printed luxury rigid boxes elevate the unboxing experience and supports high-end brand positioning.

Matte lamination softens the colors slightly and reduces glare. It gives a refined, elegant look but can subdue vibrancy, especially in lighter tones.

Gloss lamination adds shine and enhances the richness of printed colors. It reflects light and draws attention, making colors look deeper and more dynamic.

Foil stamping, especially metallic, creates striking contrast on darker papers. It enhances the logo’s visibility and adds a premium, luxurious feel to the packaging. Gold foiling however, is equally good for the lighter and dark surfaces. Yes. White ink provides an excellent contrast on brown kraft material, helping your design elements stand out clearly. It’s often used for minimalist or natural product aesthetics.

Glossy UV and aqueous coatings make colors more vivid, while matte coatings mute them slightly. UV coating also adds protection, helping preserve the print from scratches and handling.

Due to variations in surface texture and base color, some materials may absorb ink differently. Pantone colors help maintain better consistency than CMYK, but slight shifts may still occur. Test prints are recommended.

Corrugated kraft board has a uncoated rougher surface and can absorb ink unevenly. This may result in slight color shifts or lower sharpness. Using a smoother liner or a coated white corrugated cardboard can improve clarity.

Photographic prints require precision and color depth. These are best achieved on smooth white stocks like bleach card or rigid stock. Kraft and corrugated materials may distort image quality. Therefore, photographic printing is not recommended on corrugated custom boxes.

Yes. Materials like brown kraft and recycled white card are sustainable and biodegradable. We prioritise environmentally responsible stock options for eco-conscious brands.

Opaque inks are better for colored or darker materials to prevent color fade. On white stock, both standard and specialty inks perform well. therefore, custom packaging boxes made with white card stock result in brighter and vibrant colors. The ink must be matched to the stock type for best results.

Yes. This is called hybrid printing. You can use Pantone for exact brand colors and CMYK for full-color imagery in the same project. It’s ideal for packaging that needs both flexibility and precision.

Thicker materials like rigid stock provide better ink absorption and structural integrity, making them more suitable for luxury rigid packaging. Lighter stocks may not hold ink as evenly and can appear less sharp.

Use bold, high-contrast fonts and larger sizes. Avoid fine lines or small fonts when printing on kraft or corrugated board, as these can lose detail on rough textures.

Spot UV is a glossy coating applied to selected areas of a design – like logos or headlines – to highlight them. It creates contrast between matte and glossy finishes and adds visual interest.

Soft touch has a velvet-like texture and adds a premium feel, while matte lamination provides a smooth, glare-free surface. Both subdue colors slightly but offer a sophisticated finish.

Metallic ink offers shimmer without the added layer of foil. However, it’s usually less vibrant and may appear dull on textured or darker surfaces. Foil is better for achieving high shine.

A white ink base layer can be applied beneath the artwork to preserve color integrity. This prevents the material’s base color from affecting the final look.

Trapping involves slightly overlapping colors to compensate for misalignment in printing. It ensures seamless edges and prevents gaps, especially important for packaging on textured or thick materials.

RGB is meant for digital screens and doesn’t translate accurately to print. Always convert artwork to CMYK or Pantone before sending files to ensure color fidelity in the final output.

Bleed is extra margin added to your artwork beyond the trim line. It ensures your design extends fully to the edge after cutting. For packaging, we recommend a minimum of 3mm bleed on all sides.
